ABOUT YOUR TEACHER My name is Joanne Conway and I am the Second Grade Teacher here at Holy Family Catholic School (HFCS). As way of background, my husband and I have two sons, one is in High School and the other attends Middle School here at HFCS. I am originally from a small town north of Boston, Massachusetts. I lived in San Diego, California for 20 years. My husband and I met online…yes…that is right…online on Christmas Eve. I was living in San Diego and he was stationed in Africa. We married on the day of the Navy/Army game in December 2004—an Army Chaplain, Father Owen, married us and Navy beat Army (42 to 13)! We began our family there. We have also lived in Sicily, Italy, and are most recently settled in Northern Virginia. Go Navy!!!!!
Teaching is my true vocation. I like to say that I used to have a job, but now I have a vocation. Previously, I worked in the legal field, specializing in Trademarks, Copyrights and Domain Name Disputes. I earned a Bachelors Degree, a Masters Degree and a Juris Doctor in Law. I was the first in my family to graduate from college.
While living in Sicily, I traveled, worked as a Substitute Teacher at the Department of Defense Education Agency Elementary School located on NAS Sigonella, and traveled some more…earning me a whole new level of education and experiences. It was then that I knew I would leave the legal profession and become a Teacher. I would often talk to God and express how my ideal teaching job would be at a small, Catholic School teaching Second Grade. I firmly believe that God puts us where we are needed and where we need to be.
Since 2011, I have volunteered as a Religious Education Teacher, 5 of those years in Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. I have a very special place in my heart for these blessed sacraments, which compels me to want to be part of it over and over.
Teaching was never my dream as a child, but it has become my purpose later in my life. Every day I wake up grateful that I get to help children gain a lifelong love of learning in their religious, spiritual, and academic lives. It is an honor for me to teach your children.
As a final thought, in Ms. Conway’s Second Grade Class, we all have Big Brains that God gave to us to use! We are all artists, mathematicians, scientists, writers, orators, theologians, citizens, actors, singers, athletes, but most of all we are children of God united as one Second Grade family.
I hope that my students will remember me and Second Grade fondly. I want them to remember that they were challenged, did hard things, and expanded their horizons. While doing it ALL, they also laughed a lot, nurtured close friendships, gave and received many kindnesses, and practiced their faith together at Holy Family Catholic School.
